John Joseph McGrath (born circa 1838; died 1912) immigrated to South Australia from County Clare, Ireland, circa 1854 and settled in Hectorville, S. Aust., in the late 1850s. The Village of Hectorville (established 1856), was specifically marketed towards newly arrived Irish labourers. John McGrath and his brother Bartholomew McGrath were prominent local citizens who were instrumental in the construction of the first Church of the Annunciation in North Street, Hectorville, in 1863. John McGrath was elected to the recently formed Campbelltown Council in July 1868. He married his first wife, Catherine McGrath (nee McNamara; born circa 1813; died 1875) in 1864, and his second wife, Mary McGrath (nee O’Neill; born circa 1840; died 1932), in 1875. His house, known as ‘Slieve Elva’, was located at 65 Hectorville Road, Hectorville.
