Cover image for School children visiting the Pioneer Village at Hackham, S. Aust.
Description
Photograph of children outside the Morphett Vale General Store in the Pioneer Village at Hackham. The Pioneer Village was set up by Mr and Mrs Len Moore in 1972, using Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement [in Victoria] as a prototype. In 1977 the Moores sold the Pioneer Village to the Education Department for an undisclosed price – probably in the order of $200,000. The Department then leased the Village to the Noarlunga District Council, which took on responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Museum. Capital expansion projects were undertaken by the Education Department, working through the Public Buildings Department. Situated on South Road on about two hectares of ground, the village comprised a collection of buildings modelled on pioneer structures of the 1860s and 1870s, and stocked with a large collection of historical artefacts. The Museum opened to the public twice a week by the early 1980s, and regularly hosted visiting school groups. The Museum closed down in the late 1980s and the buildings were later sold and relocated to Old Tailem Town Pioneer Village at Tailem Bend.
