Title
History in the Making, Fulham Village, John White, The Oaks, 1987 (LH0027-07)
Date
Dec 1987
Description
A brief history of the property formerly known as Fulham Farm, now the site of a retirement village at 511 Henley Beach Road, Fulham. Stage one of the village was officially opened by the Attorney General Hon. C. J. Summer in 1984. Stages two and three were opened by Sir Mark Oliphant in 1986. Original owner John white, an English architect/ builder, sailed from London aboard the Tam-O-Shanter in 1836, first landing on Kangaroo Island, before docking at Holdfast Bay. The first house built on the property was called “The Reedbeds”. John White kept racehorses. One of his horses, Clonard, came second in the Caulfield Cup twice. In 1856 a chapel was built on the property at the corner of Henley Beach Road and Tapleys Hill Road. The Wesleyan Methodists held regular services of worship there. The whites were buried in a vault alongside the chapel, then moved to West Terrace Cemetery in 1960. Their son Charles built a house called “The Oaks” on the property in the early 1890s. This building is now part of Fulham Village, housing the Estate Manager’s residence on the upper floor and administration and recreation for residents on the lower floor. The article includes one black and white photograph.
